When the Englishman Edward Foxhall discovered sandalwood on the New Caledonian Pacific island of Île des Pins in 1840, it was still unknown in Europe. By the end of the 19th century, the spicy precious wood - "candana" in Sanskrit and "sandal" in Arabic - had already made a name for itself: it was used as a valuable ointment for hair and body care. In Asia, it is still used today for incense to help against inner turmoil.
